Moving: Part One

Posted by: Maggie

One of my tasks to make our move a little easier has been to clear out all the unnecessary paperwork from our little filing cabinet. For years I’ve kept every paper that had a social security number, driver’s license number, or credit card account number on it, just because we didn’t own a paper shredder and I didn’t want to have our identities stolen. Why we never purchased a shredder? I don’t know. Laziness, thriftiness, a little from column A, a little from column B. Well, we finally bought one and I got to work.

This was about 3/4 of my total stack. It didn’t seem like too great a task, I assumed it would take me an hour or so to get it all done. But, unfortunately, we bought a little cheap 6-sheets-at-a-time shredder that overheated and shut itself down every 5 minutes, so what I thought would take an hour took an entire day. Not non-stop obviously, but for several hour long blocks throughout the day.

Because it was taking so long I thought that it would be a great project to give Eleanor to do while I packed. But the shredder informed me that letting a baby use a machine with sharp blades that can slice through credit cards was not a good idea. Who knew?!

Also you shouldn’t put your tie or hair into the shredder! We’ll have to remember that!

New Hair Again

Is it weird that I feel the need to let everyone know every time we get our hair cut? Probably, right?

But how can I resist the cute Eleanor and Stacy pics? Thanks Stacy!

Here are our before and afters:

We have been so busy lately that it had been quite a while since we had been to see Stacy. Once I realized that Eleanor could no longer see through her bangs, I called to make our appointment.

You may also notice the two inches of roots in my before. Stacy fixed that up for me and gave me a fabulous summery strawberry blonde!

4th of July 2009

We spent this 4th of July with the extended family.

Eleanor loves it when we spend time with the family. She gets to hang out with her second-cousins and eat food we would never let her eat at home, like potato chips and cake. We’re terribly cruel parents.

The 4th of July is also my first-cousin-once-removed’s birthday.

Eleanor begged for cake like a puppy until her Grandpa gave her a few bites.

Then she had to show her belly full of cake to the dog to make him jealous.

After cake all the kids played in the backyard.

Eleanor’s generation thus far is almost all girls. There is one boy who is 13, but all six of the younger kids are girls.

After fun with the family we thought we’d try to check out the fireworks at a local park. All of the parking within several blocks was full so we drove to the top of a parking structure about a mile away and watched them from there. The view was decent, and the show was fine, but I really prefer a show with accompanying music, so fireworks from a distance don’t really do it for me. My parents were always doing that when we were kids, parking near fireworks shows to avoid having to drag all five kids to a show and pay the admission cost for a family of seven. Although we had fun, I was always a little disappointed. I vow to never do that again, it’s all about the paid admission shows from now on.

Eleanor may feel the same way I do about it, because she was not at all interested in the show. It was past her bedtime and she was a little cranky and did not want to hold still to watch the show. She really enjoyed last year’s show. I suspect it was the lack of music. We’ll do better next year.
