Back on the Sauce

Posted by: Maggie

About two months ago we quit coffee. We did it for a few reasons. For one, I’ve been trying to lose some weight and I wanted to cut out the extra calories from the cream I put in it. Although I love hot coffee black, especially with dessert, for some reason I only want to drink iced coffee with Silk Vanilla Soy Creamer at home in the mornings.

The iced coffee obsession started during my arduous last semester of law school when I was juggling baby, school, and part-time job. I badly needed the caffeine to avoid plummeting to my death during my morning drive through the canyon to school due to the absolute lack of sleep. I also was giving up my morning Starbucks visit to save the money I had been wasting, and because I was always running late, so I never had time to stop. I went for the iced coffee because with a vanilla soy creamer it was more of a little treat akin to my vanilla lattes (just so you know, the good people at Silk have not paid for this mention, but gosh I sure wouldn’t turn down any coupons or free samples they wanted to send me, that vanilla soy creamer is the absolute best!).

The second reason we quit coffee was just to save the extra money we were spending on coffee every week. It wasn’t a lot, probably ten dollars a week, but ten dollars is kind of a lot when you’re broke.

But, as you’ve already guessed from the title, we, well I, am back on the coffee (Josh is still resisting). Yes, I’m still trying to lose weight and yes, we are still broke.

Here’s what happened. I had the fantastic idea to send Josh to get us some iced coffee on a Saturday morning a few weeks ago. Big mistake. He went back the next morning and then we got some more iced coffee the following weekend. Then during the week I started to crave it. And that was it. I just couldn’t handle it. I am weak. So very weak.

We’ve been super busy lately. Me with my job search, and Josh is working on a redesign of this site and some other web design projects so we’ve been staying up too late and not getting enough sleep. The pressure built and built. Finally last week after taking Eleanor to the park I was so exhausted that I decided to stop and get an iced coffee on my way home. Oh my goodness, it was wonderful. I came home, gave Eleanor lunch, put her down for a nap and then cleaned the entire house. And when I say clean, I mean serious, scrub the tub, clean the grout with a toothbrush, dust every surface in the house, clean. I was like a college kid on Aderol during finals.

I realize that I either need the coffee to give me that little boost of energy or I need to sleep more. So I’m going with the coffee for now. In the meantime, I’ll work on the sleep. We’ll see. Maybe with the coffee I’ll work so quickly and efficiently during Eleanor’s nap time that I won’t need to stay up so late.

By the way, I also read this post last week on one of my favorite blogs, Girl’s Gone Child, and saw it as a serious affirmation of my choice to go back on the sauce. Coffee is number two, on her list of secrets to being a successful Work-at-Home Mom.

Yeah I Know,
We Go To Menchie’s A Lot

Last Sunday afternoon we met Betsy and Amy at Menchie’s to celebrate me passing the Bar Exam and Andrew getting his first engineering credit on an album. Unfortunately, Andrew couldn’t make it because he is now too cool and important for us and is working on albums for big shots! Just kidding Andrew, we are so proud of you! You are amazing and way too cool to hang out with us anyway!

We had fun hanging out with Betsy and Amy despite Andrew’s absence.

Betsy brought me some lovely flowers as a congratulations gift. So thoughtful! I brought them home and put them in my new favorite vase, an artichoke jar.

Nerd Chic

Ever since I was in the third grade I wanted to wear glasses. I had a friend who wore them and I thought they made her look so smart. Unfortunately, my eyesight was always perfect. Since college I have considered buying a pair of glasses with just plain glass lenses. You know, just to look smarter, but I could never justify the cost of such an expensive accessory.

But things started looking up after a year of law school. I occasionally had some trouble reading the white board if I was at the back of the lecture hall. So I went to my ophthalmologist, Josh’s dad, for a check up. He said that my eyesight wasn’t perfect anymore, but that I didn’t really need any correction. I was so disappointed. Now however, after two more years of law school and several months of studying for the Bar Exam, my eyesight has grown worse. I really do blame law school. I think it was all the book reading and staring at a laptop screen all day long.

Over the last couple of months, I have really noticed the difference in my vision. I can’t read the small print on a menu board at a restaurant and I have had trouble reading DVD menus on my tv screen from across the room, especially if it is a small and unusual font. So I had been meaning to go back to Josh’s dad for another check up, but after months of talking about it I just hadn’t done it. I would need to get a babysitter and then drive to his office which is about thirty to forty-five minutes from our house. It just seemed like a pain so I let it go for a few months.

Then two weeks ago, I happened to have an appointment with my regular doctor for a check-up, which is just down the street from our place. While I was there I mentioned to her that I felt like I was getting old because my eyesight was getting worse. She offered to call downstairs to the optometry center at the hospital and get me appointment. About twenty minutes later I was getting my eyes checked and getting a prescription for my very first pair of glasses.

I was thrilled, but I agonized over choosing the right frames! I went back and forth and back and forth between three different pairs and finally decided on a pair I liked. They were a reasonably priced frame, but with the lenses they were still painfully expensive. But at least I could finally justify the cost, seeing that I’ve gone blind (actually it is not very much of a correction, but what a difference it makes).

In the week from when I ordered them to when I picked them up I became very anxious and regretted not bringing a friend along to tell me if they looked right. It is such a big commitment and really changes how your face looks. But when I picked them up I was relieved. I was so happy with the pair I had chosen. I really think they fit my face well. I think they make my very round face look a little longer and thinner. And, my goodness, how brilliant I look in them. It’s like my IQ goes up at least 20 points as soon as I put them on my face. I am quite pleased.

Here are some shots of me modeling them with a few different looks:

In addition to looking fabulous, I can now see! I had no idea what I was missing. It really was an incredible difference. Everything was suddenly in focus no matter the distance. I had no idea that I should be able to see each individual leaf on every tree. It was really just amazing, but more importantly don’t I look cute and smart?
