Weekly Pregnancy Update: Week 14

Posted by: Maggie

First of all, this is last weeks update. So sorry for the delay. I’ve been getting very busy at work and my hard drive is full up, so I’ve been spending alot of time clearing out old photos before I can upload any new.

I also want to apologize for the lack of posts over the last couple weeks. On top of being busy, I’ve still been pretty tired so I’ve been dropping a lot of things lately. But I’m getting some energy back, so I’m going to try to get back on my regular posting schedule this week! I have a whole week of great posts planned for you. So, please stick with me!

The Week in Pregnant

I had another pretty good week. Still tired, and I had another migraine, but beside that mostly good. Nothing really new baby wise.

Cravings of the Week

  • Still craving candy and ice cream, and soda, pretty much anything sweet.

Tears of the Week

  • Stevie Wonder on the radio singing “I Just Called to Say I Love You”

Baby Brain Moments of the Week

  • I’ve just had general issues concentrating, and remembering words. I feel like I can’t carry on a normal conversation anymore.

The Week in Pregnant

This week was much better than last. I’ve got a little more energy than I’ve had, and no nausea at all. I’ve just been getting some sinus headaches since I can’t take my usual allergy medicine while pregnant, but I’m not miserable.

I’ve started to feel the baby moving. Just little flutters once in awhile. But it’s pretty exciting.

AND if you noticed in the photo above, I’m officially showing. Just a bit, enough for me not to be able to button my jeans. But not enough to look pregnant rather than chubby in person. They say that everything happens quicker in your second pregnancy, and that definitely is true for me. I wasn’t showing at all with Eleanor for at least a few more weeks.

Cravings of the Week

  • Candy!

Tears of the Week

  • A Johnson & Johnson commercial with a Dad playing with his little boys
  • Basically every episode of every show I watched all week long.

Baby Brain Moments of the Week

  • Right now, trying to remember my baby brain moments.

Blogher Book Club Review: Lunch Wars

Posted by: Maggie

When I heard that Amy Kalafa’s Lunch Wars was next up in the BlogHer Book Club*, I was thrilled.  The food we feed our kids is such a big deal for me. Since Eleanor was born, I’ve read a number of books and watched a bunch of documentaries about health, nutrition and the food industry in this country. But, aside from watching Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution series on ABC,  I haven’t heard much about the state of food in our schools.

Kalafa explores the state of school lunches today and tells her readers exactly what they can do about it.  Lunch Wars give a brief but compelling overview of the harmfulness of the foods available to our children at school and the very real health consequences associated with that food. Kalafa follows by explaining step-by-step what a passionate parent can do to make a change in their community.

Each chapter ends with a list of action steps you can take to make a difference in your children’s school. The book is filled with stories of parents, chefs, nutritionists, writers, and others who have worked to change the school food in their communities. Many of the stories are disheartening. It’s sad to hear about the challenges these individuals have faced when they try to make food healthier for children. But so many of the stories are incredibly inspiring. It’s amazing to hear some of the success stories, where food has not only become healthy, delicious, and sustainable, but many of the programs have become financially profitable for the schools.

The book made me worried for the day when Eleanor starts school, but also prepared and excited to start my own Lunch War when the time comes.

Head over to the Blogher Book Club to join the discussion and read what other bloggers are saying about Amy Kalafa’s Lunch Wars.
