Living Vicariously Through My Child

Posted by: Maggie

All parents have dreams for their children and many of those dreams include some way of living vicariously through their children. I know you will all deny it, but you can just admit it. You know it’s true. I won’t judge you. There are those parents who push their kids in sports because they dreamed of becoming a star athlete themselves. There are the stage moms who always wanted to be stars. There are the parents who demand that their kids do well in school because they always wished they had done better, become lawyers, or doctors, or architects.

Not unlike these parents, I have a dream for my daughter. But it’s not a big dream. It’s not about fame or success, but it is about living vicariously through her. I want her to do something that I always wanted to do, but never could.

Eleanor will be a drummer!

I always wanted to be a drummer, but because of my disability I can’t really flex my ankle to use the pedal on a bass drum. Also, I have no rhythm, so even if I could I’d be a pretty crappy drummer.

I don’t know why I love the drums so much. There is just something super tough–very physical, kinda aggressive–about playing the drums. Especially so for a female drummer. I loooove to see a female drummer.

So, my dream for Eleanor is to be a kick ass female drummer. I’m already planning to get her a drum kit for her next birthday (we thought about getting it for her 2nd birthday, but decided it was a little early).  And two of her uncles play drums, so she already has teachers ready for her. I can’t wait!

As for what she does with the rest of her life, I don’t really care as long as she’s happy. But you better believe this kid is going to be top of her class in high school, that’s non-negotiable. After that it’ll be up to her!

Fabulous Friday: Newhall Coffee

Posted by: Maggie

I’m a little particular when it comes to coffee. I think most coffee kinda sucks. I like my coffee like I like my men–Jewish! Sorry, I couldn’t resist that stupid joke, but really I brew my coffee extra strong and drink it black (unless I’m making iced coffee then I add cream).

We recently started drinking Newhall Coffee. My new mom friends from SCV Moms Blog had been raving about it, so we decided to try it. I love it. And it’s nice to be supporting a local company. From their website:

“As the original Micro-Roaster in Los Angeles County, Newhall Coffee has earned a reputation as the freshest, highest quality coffee in the region. Our coffee is made from the top 1% of Class 1 specialty coffee beans and is carefully hand-roasted in small ‘micro’ batches and delivered the day after we roast it to all our retailers, corporate clients and individuals. Fresh coffee simply tastes better!”

I actually have been a supporter of Newhall Coffee for a long time. The owner, Mitch, used to own a couple coffee shops in town called Java N Jazz, where I spent a lot of time studying in high school and college. (Okay I wasn’t studying much, mostly reading Kerouac and Vonnegut and drinking a lot of coffee.)

This morning I had the opportunity to attend an event for SCV Moms Blog at Newhall Coffee’s Headquarters! We were there to taste test and vote on the new SCV Moms Blend, a portion of the proceeds from which will go to the SCV Moms Blog’s Neighbor-to-Neighbor campaign benefiting Single Mother’s Outreach.

Mitch, the owner, gave us a tour and sent us each home with a bag of Pumpkin Spice coffee and a bag of fresh roasted beans still hot straight out of the roaster!

I’ll be posting more photos from the event on SCV Moms Blog soon.

Thanks to Mitch, his wife Lisa, and the rest of the Newhall Coffee gang as well as Jackie and Andrea from SCV Moms Blog for hosting this awesome event!

Now I’m going to stink like coffee for weeks I’m sure! You really should smell my hair right now. It smells like I stuck my head in a vat of fresh micro-roasted coffee beans…delicious!!

A HoodLim Baby Shower

Posted by: Maggie

New Years weekend I went to the HoodLims’ baby shower. Josh and Eleanor stayed home, because Josh’s cousin was in town visiting.

The HoodLims have such great parties, always with tons of food and drinks.

I spent most of the party hanging out with their lovely friends.

Then we all sat and watched the requisite baby shower games.

One was a guys relay race, of course with backpack bellies.

Another was backpack belly twister. Pretty entertaining to watch.

The last game was guess the baby’s name. Kristy read all the names aloud and announced that we would have to wait until the baby was born to find out who won!

The cake was the cutest! With tiny baby Crocs on top.

In addition to cake we had Kristy’s famous giant pizookie! So delicious!

After cake and pizookie we headed inside to open the gifts.

Andrew kept track of the gifts on a spreadsheet on his laptop. Those HoodLims are so cute.

Kristy got tons of great stuff, including a very cute diaper cake!

Coming Soon: HoodLims Maternity Portraits & Newborn portraits sometime in February! We can’t wait to meet the little HoodLim!
