Our New Apartment

Posted by: Maggie

We pretty much hate it.  We like the extra bathroom and bigger kitchen, but since moving in we have had to have maintenance come to fix something at least once a week.  This includes: broken toilet seat, clogged kitchen sink, broken air conditioning (several times), carpet tacks sticking up from the floor, and the lights not working in the master bathroom.  The maintenance staff are great, very nice and helpful, and usually respond pretty quickly.  They even replaced the entire air conditioning unit because of our problems, which I didn’t expect. It is just ridiculous that we need something fixed every week and we’ve only been here a month.  The place looks really nice, everything newly renovated, new cabinets and counters, the walls already painted a nice buff color with white trim, a full size washer and dryer, but the longer we stay the more problems we find.  Just yesterday we found almost dime size holes in the frames of both bedroom windows.  We had been wondering how flies had been getting in, we never leave the doors open, now we know.

In addition we have loud and rude neighbors.  Our windows overlook Ventura Boulevard which is noisy enough, although the street noise doesn’t really bother me, it’s just white noise.  What is really noisy is the people who stand outside our building, under our windows, talking on their cell phones late at night, or the people who pull into the parking garage, the entrance of which is below our windows, at 1am blaring music with their car windows rolled down, or the people who think it’s a good idea and not inconsiderate to their new neighbors to move in from 11pm to 2am.

I wish we had just stayed and paid the extra $100 a month.

Moving

Immediately upon returning from taking the Bar we had to start packing.  We hadn’t planned on moving, but when our lease came up for renewal they wanted to raise our rent by almost $100 per month.  We really liked where we were living, but just couldn’t afford to stay.  So we found a place in Woodland Hills that is a little bigger, two bathrooms rather than one, a slightly larger kitchen, and a walk-in closet in Eleanor’s room, and is about $150 cheaper per month than it would have been to stay. So we packed all weekend and moved the following Monday.

Eleanor is a good helper so we let her pack the fragile items:

I don’t think I mentioned it in an earlier post, but about a week or two after she started crawling she began pulling up on everything and doing what the baby books call “cruising,” which is walking holding on to furniture. She is a pro now and we are pretty sure she’ll be walking in about a month. She is already able to stand up for a few seconds at a time without being held or holding on to anything, but when she realizes that she’s doing she looks worried and slowly sits down.

It was pretty crappy to have to move, but Josh and Eleanor made sure to take some time out for belly kisses.
