Valentine’s Day 2011

Posted by: Maggie

As usual Valentine’s Day was low key at the KG house. We celebrated the day before, Sunday, by exchanging cards and gifts. Josh got me a bouquet of my favorite flower, white Calla Lillies, and a box of my favorite chocolates, See’s Nuts & Chews. I got him a brass owl paperweight and a new pair of sunglasses (sorry I didn’t take photos of those, maybe I’ll save them for a Fabulous Friday post!).

In the evening I started preparing Eleanor’s Valentines for her class. As usual, I went a tad overboard. I’m so bad at doing things simple and casual, it’s really annoying to have the compulsive need to go over the top. ALL THE TIME. Although, in my head these projects always seem smaller and easier than they end up being.

I designed some Photo Valentines a few weeks prior and had them printed for pretty cheap by my photo printing vendor. I figured that was the best way for the other kids to know who their valentine was from, since they can’t read yet. Also I sorta hate the cheap, boring, princess Valentines from the grocery store. Then I thought I’d hole punch them and tie them with ribbons to goodie bags. Seems simple right? Except then I thought it would be fun to make the goodies instead of just buying candies. And I thought about just making a batch of cookies, but then somehow I switched that to Rice Krispie Treats with HEART SPRINKLES!! Too cute!

And then I found a heart shaped cookie cutter in my kitchen and decided I should cut the treats into hearts, because that would be soooooooo adorable! You can see how things got out of hand.

It took FOREVER to cut them, put them in their individual bags, hole punch the cards, tie them with ribbon, and curl the ribbon! A much more time consuming project than I had originally planned! But they did turn out incredibly cute!

Oh, and I also decided to make chocolate-covered strawberries for Eleanor’s class party. I am some sort of masochist. It makes Josh a little crazy.

Valentine’s Day morning I made Eleanor a strawberry smoothie and Josh had brought her home some donut holes! She was actually more interested in her cereal! Funny girl!

She wore her specially chosen, red apple Valentine’s Day dress to school. We did a mini portrait session before getting in the car.

Isn’t she the cutest little Valentine ever! She had a great time at her class party and enjoyed the tons of candy and lollipops from her classmates over the next two weeks! Valentine’s Day is kinda awesome!

My 29th Birthday: Part One

Posted by: Maggie

For my birthday, we dropped Eleanor at my dad & step-mom’s place and Josh took me out to a surprise dinner and movie in Hollywood. We went to an old favorite of mine, Guelaguetza! It’s Oaxacan-style Mexican food. Back in the day, when I was in college at UCLA, I used to go to their other location in Palms which was almost directly across the street from my very first apartment. It was my very favorite place to eat, but that location has since closed. I had no idea that the owners had other locations, until we arrived at this one for dinner!

I was thrilled! They have the best moles anywhere, and the red mole comes on the tortilla chips with crumbled cheese instead of salsa. So delicious!

And of course they have Mexican coke, made with real sugar! Awesome!

I had my favorite vegetarian Clayuda, which is a giant crispy tortilla covered with a black bean paste and a bunch of delicious veggies including cactus, tomato and avocado.

Josh had a cheese enchilada with red mole and covered with oaxacan string cheese. So good!

After a tasty dinner we went to see True Grit! Which was fantastic! And that was my first 29th birthday celebration! More up tomorrow!

Fabulous Friday: A Few of My Favorite Things

Posted by: Maggie

I thought I’d kick off this Christmas Eve by celebrating a few of my favorite things of this winter season!

1. Eleanor looking adorable in her PJs and boots ready for her classroom Holiday Pajama Party!

2. My brand new super toasty, comfy, and cozy slipper boots! My feet are always freezing, so I usually wear socks around the house, but I slipped and fell in the kitchen the other day, so I decided I needed something with a little tread to prevent future slips! I got these ones at Payless. I also saw some other cute stripey ones at Old Navy the other day, but they didn’t have my size.

3. Scarves! Especially on the fellas!

4. Hats that keep me warm and make me look just a little french. Ooh la la!

5. My Flasher/Kermit the Reporter Trench!

6. Sitting in the living room with only the Christmas Tree lights on.

7. My Grandmother’s Christmas China. Apparently, when I was a kid I told her that I loved them, so when she passed away a few years ago she left them to me. My mother has been clearing out the house since my grandfather passed away earlier this year and she brought the set of dishes to me! I love them! I guess I had good taste as a kid!

8. Belgian Chocolate Mini Bars from Trader Joe’s. Delicious! Especially the dark chocolate espresso ones!

9. My new Christmas mugs! I picked them up at the Goodwill for a buck! Can’t beat that!

10. Taking two weeks off for the holidays! One of which, this past week, has been spent with just Josh and me, while Eleanor has been in school. It’s so nice to get some alone time with my handsome husband. Next week the three of us will be home together all week. I have a feeling we won’t get out of our PJs all week!
