Summer’s Last Hurrah!
Ace Hotel, Palm Springs: Part Three

Posted by: Maggie

Sunday morning of our Palm Springs weekend we got up, showered and dressed, and headed down to have breakfast with Andrew while everyone else was still sleeping. I remember the days when we slept late, but just barely. Andrew is an early riser so he was happy to get up and have breakfast with us boring parents.

We had breakfast at the hotel’s very cute diner-style restaurant, King’s Highway.

The food was super tasty. Although, they put fennel in my hash browns, and I am just not a fennel fan.

Photos of me by Josh! (p.s. He’s getting very good, and he shoots 100% in manual mode! I’m so proud!)

Here’s my drunken “let me tell you something about something” face and accompanying pointing finger:

Although I was not drunk at the time. It was like 8 in the morning.

The best part about breakfast was in the middle of breakfast, when the hostess or manager or whatever she was, said that she had an announcement to make. She said that there were some very important people at the restaurant that morning and whenever important people are there they like to do something special for them and then..she broke out in SONG! She sang “As Time Goes By” for us all while walking around the restaurant. It was amazing!

After breakfast we went to our room to pack up and got a text from Maria, asking when we would be back because Eleanor had been a monster. We had planned on staying until after lunch, but decided that we had better just head right back to relieve poor Aunt Momo! We checked out at about 11am, said our goodbyes, and headed home.

When we picked up Eleanor, we learned that she had been a little terror. She had been cranky most of the time she was there. She kept asking to go home, would not sleep through the night, woke up repeatedly and finally slept for a long stretch from 6-10am, and then would not nap in the afternoon. We apologized profusely and took the very cranky girl home where she almost immediately passed out on the couch and slept for several hours while we unpacked and got dinner ready.

We had a wonderful and much needed little vacation. We wish we could have stayed for one more day, but we still had such a nice, relaxing trip. We were so happy to be able to do it with good friends! Love you guys! Next year Mexico!

Ace Hotel, Palm Springs: Part Two

After checking out our room we went to visit with the gang to discover that after a morning of vintage furniture perusing and dinner grocery shopping they were now heading to the pool. So we went back to our room changed into our swimsuits and headed down. Sorry we left the cameras in the room. I figured no one wants photos of themselves in swimsuits on the blog anyway. And I have requested that Amy not post photos of me in my, albeit very cute kinda retro, bikini. Although, Amy if you’re reading this, I’ll amend that request to say that you may post photos ONLY IF they are flattering PLEASE! I can’t let that spray tan that I paid good money for go unblogged.  Although if you look back at my bathroom mirror photo from yesterday I think I look pretty fabulously tan.

Anyways, we hung out by the pool talking and drinking cocktails and reading magazines for a few hours. It was pretty fantastic.

Then we all changed into our dinner outfits and walked on over to The Schubert’s room. Their room had this great big patio.

I brought a bunch of stuff for appetizers (and so did the rest of the kids) for our little party on the patio that evening. So while the men had gone off looking for a travel grill, we put out the hor d’oeuvres.

I made these caprese skewers with The Schubert’s homegown basil. Delicious!

I decided to try a new cocktail for this very special occasion. A greyhound, it’s 1/3 vodka, 2/3 grapefruit juice, and completely delicious. And it looks pretty too. It would look nicer if I had remembered to add the lime I had cut to for garnish. Oh well.

So the men grilled some steaks for the meat eaters and some veggies for Josh and I on the mini grills.

Very fun! It was such a nice little relaxing dinner with friends.

After dinner we walked over to a nearby outdoor area with a big fireplace, a couch and a bunch of chairs.

I brought out my ipod dock, and we listened to music, and had wine and scotch and cigars. Josh and I and the other ladies passed on the cigars.

It was the perfect child-free evening with friends, alcohol, music, and a hotel room to just walk back to.

As it got late everyone decided to go back to the pool, but Josh and I opted to go back to our room for some more child-free activities. Like falling asleep in the middle of a conversation about whether we should order some dessert from room service.

The conclusion of our trip on Thursday!

Summer’s Last Hurrah!
Ace Hotel, Palm Springs: Part One

Last Wednesday was the official first day of fall (if you can believe it with today’s record heat)! We spent the previous weekend, the last weekend of the Summer, at Ace Hotel in Palm Springs with the Schuberts and Keith & Shannon. It was a very short trip, but we had a fantastic time.

We dropped Eleanor at my sister’s around 11am and arrived in Palm Springs at about 2pm. A little later than planned, I waited until that morning to pack and shop for drinks and appetizers for that evening’s festivities, and you know, things don’t always move so quickly when you’re trying to get a 2 1/2 year old out of the house.

First thing we took some shots of our room. Such fantastic decor! You all know how important that is to me!

It’s this eclectic mix of funky vintage furniture, with some modern California style, and a few nautical touches (sailcloth bedspread and curtains). Love it! So much fun!

And of course my hotel bathroom mirror shot! If I look a little cranky it’s because it was HOT out!

More tomorrow!
