Preschool Troubles

Posted by: Maggie

First of all, look at this girl:

Would you kick this sweet, adorable child out of school?

Okay, I’m exaggerating a bit. She didn’t get kicked out of school, but she did get kicked out of nap time at school.

It all started over the summer, when she stopped napping. Everyday I would pick her up from school at 3pm and most days I’d get the same report (from a frustrated teacher) that she had once again not napped. AND not only did she not nap, but she would not sit and play quietly. She was getting up and running around and thought it was funny that the teachers wanted her to stop. Yup, my kid is a trouble maker.

She had stopped napping at home on the weekends as well. We always attempt a nap and give her a period of time that she needs to stay in her room before she could come out. And occasionally during that time she would fall asleep, but more and more often she just played for a while and we let her get up.

When the fall semester started, they decided that they weren’t going to put up with her anymore.  I explained to them that I didn’t understand why they were having such a problem with her,  she behaves for us at home. But, then again, we don’t ever expect her to sit quietly for 2 hours! Honestly, I don’t know how that would even be possible or why they think it should be. Does anyone know any three or four year old who can sit quietly for 20 minutes much less two hours?

I recognize their frustration. Every other Pre-K kid is napping. And while they are, she wants to run around and make noise. So, what are they supposed to do? Have one teacher watch her while she plays in another room? I have no idea. So, they’ve asked me to switch her to a half day schedule. I had already switched from full day to 3pm at the start of the year. Now they’d like for me to pick her up at noon. Which, cuts my 6 hour workday to just 3 hours. Work is not crazy busy right now, so I’m managing, but I’m not thrilled about the arrangement.

Has anyone else out there had this problem? What did you or your kid’s school do with your preschooler who refused to nap?

A Little Cranky Update!

Posted by: Maggie

Hi Friends!

I meant to write you some fun posts yesterday and today, but I’m not perfect alright! I’m busy entertaining house guests, being a lawyer with a court hearing this week, while also being a photographer booking new clients and planning shoots for next week! So get off my back internet! I hear you complaining, and I’m telling you to knock it off!

So, anyways, instead of actually writing what I was planning for yesterday and today I thought I’d just give you a little update on what we’re up to this summer!

  • I’ve just completed an AMAZING Online Boudoir Photography Workshop from my favorite photographer in the whole world Christa Meola!
  • Eleanor has been enjoying her preschool summer program, which features weekly visitors including the Bubble Man, a Reptile Handler, and the Library Fairy, and a water play day once a week! I wish I was in a preschool summer program!
  • My best friend Andrew turned 30, so I took him out for Mexican food, and his wife Amy bought him an awesome new tattoo, can’t wait to see it in person and for Amy to blog about it!
  • Josh’s best friend Brian came to stays with us for sort of a week. He arrived last Tuesday and left this Tuesday night, but left us for the weekend to be in a friend’s wedding in San Francisco. So, we didn’t have nearly enough Brian time. Although his stories about Texas and teaching college kids are pretty amazing so we forgive him.
  • While Brian was here we took him to see the new Dinosaur exhibit at the Natural History Museum, had drinks with Andrew, went to visit UCLA, had dinner in Westwood with an old friend from high school plus Diddy Riese Cookies, and had a day at the beach, followed by dinner party with my friend and frequent cranky commenter Megan! It was a pretty full, although far too short, visit. There will be posts to come about various portions of the visit.
  • Josh and I will be celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary this weekend with a night at the Farmer’s Daughter in West Hollywood. Can’t wait! A night without a child! We are going to watch so much tv!
  • Eleanor will be at home with Uncle Elliott. She’s pretty excited about that.
  • I’ve got a Boudoir Party shoot with three lovely ladies next week! I am beyond excited!
  • AND I’ve got a wedding and a baby shower coming up this month.

So, you know, pretty busy over here. How bout you guys? Having a fun summer?

Pre-Halloween Festivities Part One

Posted by: Maggie

I’m back! I actually wanted to post last week, but my computer’s hard drive is full and I didn’t have the time to clear space to upload all my Halloween photos. I took time over the weekend, cleared out my files, and uploaded all my recent photos. So, I’m back to regular posting.

I love Halloween. I have since I was little. I love all that is spooky and scary and dark and creepy. I realize that in the last several years I’ve gotten lazy about celebrating.  So I wanted to try to do more Halloween things this year. We ended up doing about half the things that I planned since Eleanor was feeling sick Halloween weekend. We had to skip a Halloween party and a Haunted House outing that we had planned. But we did manage to do a few fun Halloweeny things.

The weekend before Halloween we spent a Sunday morning at a Pumpkin Festival in Hart Park.  It kinda sucked but Eleanor still had some fun. We got to see a few minutes of a Creatures of the Night animal show.

And then we went on a Haunted Hay ride.  They usually hold this at night, haunted house style with guys jumping out and other scariness, but they were holding a daytime version safe for the kids. The following photos were taken from on the ride.

Eleanor is pretty brave, but she did seem concerned by all the scary guys.

The best part of the ride was toward the end when the hay ride was held up by a band of desperados looking for candy.

Our next Halloween adventure was the Harvest Festival at Eleanor’s preschool on the Friday afternoon before Halloween. There was a bounce house and a bunch of games to play.

Eleanor played a few of the games, but was mostly interested in the bounce house.  She wore her cowgirl costume (She wanted to be Woody from Toy Story).

We spent most of the festival playing on the playground rather than partaking in the festivities. I think Eleanor was pretty excited to have us there to play with her at school.

We did get to enjoy a delicious Halloween cupcake. Eleanor’s favorite part of the afternoon!

After a couple hours Eleanor was pretty exhausted so we headed home for family movie night!

More Pre-Halloween fun tomorrow!
