2010 Resolutions: 1. Lose 10 Pounds

Posted by: Maggie

So here’s the plan for the next six weeks, which is how quickly I’d like to lose the weight:

Step One: Exercise

I’ve started taking a Pilates Class at Pilates Plus Santa Clarita. I know, that sounds crazy, it is. It’s really, really difficult for me, especially with my disability. But the owner and instructor, Syd, is amazing and she’s working with me to teach me the modifications I need so that I can keep up with the class and still get a great workout. And it really is a great workout. I was sore for four days after my first class. And sore in like every muscle in my body.

I think that taking a class rather than just exercising on my own will really keep me motivated. It makes me accountable to someone other than myself, which is really what I need.

I’m taking the class three days a week and I plan to try to walk for 30 minutes on the days that I don’t have class.

Step Two: Food

As I’ve mentioned in the past, we eat really healthfully in our house. We don’t buy soda, except for one a day on the weekend. We don’t buy much processed food. We don’t buy snack foods.

But I do have some food weaknesses. Mostly ice cream. And because I’m better at quitting something altogether rather than allowing it in moderation, I’ve decided to quit ice cream until my birthday (Feb. 5). After that, we’ll see.

In addition, I decided to quit my weekend sodas.

I’m also going to try to limit my dairy intake. Because I’m a vegetarian I tend to favor cheese in a lot of meals, but I know it adds on the calories big time, so I’m just going to try to be mindful about how much dairy I eat.

Also, I’m going to eat breakfast. I usually just have coffee and occasionally toast. But all the experts say that you should start your metabolism going first thing in the morning by having a good breakfast and that is supposed to really help for weight loss. This one is going to be tough for me. I don’t actually like any breakfast food, but I’m going to figure something out and make it work.

Step Three: Sleep

I’m going to talk about this more in another resolution post, but for now I’ll say that when I get tired I want to eat. Like Josh mentioned in his resolution post we are going to try to get to bed by 10pm every night, so far it hasn’t really happened, but we’re working on it.

And that’s it for this resolution. Wish me luck! I won’t need it! I’m going to do this one! I’m in it to win it!

My 2010 Resolutions

Posted by: Maggie

I’m not great at keeping resolutions. Most years I have the same resolutions and rarely stick to them. But I usually try some that I know will be difficult for me and some that I know will be easier and that way if I accomplish the easier ones at least I accomplished something.

You can read my list from last year here.

I actually kinda forgot about all but two of these. Looking back at them I’m pretty excited that I have accomplished all but the two I remembered: losing weight and getting out of debt. I wanted to lose 15 lbs last year and lost a few pounds, gained a few, and lost a few throughout the year, but never had the motivation to meet my goal. I’m about 4 lbs down from last year. The getting out of debt thing just wasn’t a realistic goal, so it didn’t happen. I did pass the bar and get a job. I got a DSL camera and started working on my photography skills again. And I started spending more time with friends, at least once a month, usually more.

This year I want to be more specific in my resolutions and make them more realistically achievable. So instead of just listing them, I’m giving them each a post of their own. That way I am forcing myself to be more specific about what the goal is and how and when I plan to reach it.

Most of my resolutions for this year remain from last year or build on the ones that I achieved from last year.

Here is the list with posts for each to follow [updated with links to later posts]:

  1. Lose 10 pounds
  2. Get Serious About Photography
  3. Spend More Alone Time with My Husband
  4. See Friends Twice a Month
  5. Be a Better Friend
  6. Get Happier

Happy Chinese New Year!

I meant to post my resolutions on the regular New Year, but didn’t get around to it so here are my resolutions for Chinese New Year:

  • Take the Bar and Pass this time
  • Lose the rest of the weight I’ve been trying to lose. I’ve lost about 25 lbs since Eleanor was born (35 if you count giving birth) and I’d like to lose at least another 15 lbs
  • Get out of credit card debt
  • Buy a better camera (this may conflict with the previous resolution)
  • Take photography up again (it was a pretty serious hobby of mine in high school, I actually was seriously considering art school and wanted to be a fashion photographer for awhile, but my plans changed at some point, I couldn’t really afford it as a hobby anymore back in undergrad, and I never switched my skills from film to digital so all I have now is a digital point-and-shoot camera and not a nice digital SLR like I want, my 17 year old self would be very disappointed in me.)
  • Get a job (this will make most of the others possible)
  • Have a night out with friends at least once a month (after I’m done studying for the Bar).

Wish me luck (or maybe just better will power)!

Oh, and check out the pics from regular New Year’s Eve with The Schuberts here. We had so much fun watching When Harry Met Sally and The Little Mermaid (Andrew’s choice). Love those guys!
