Yesterday, I asked you all what you loved most about the holiday season. Well, one of the things that I love most is one of our Keegan Gross Family Christmas traditions. For the last three years, Josh and I have been reading the stories from David Sedaris’ Holidays On Ice in the days leading up to Christmas. There are six short stories in the book and we read them aloud to each other, one a night, before going to bed beginning on the 18th (tonight) and finish on the 23rd. (I love being read to and reading aloud myself. One of the best things about having kids, is the excuse to be able to do it daily.)
If you’re not familiar with David Sedaris, you should get familiar. I think he’s my favorite living author. He is just hilarious and witty and sardonic and just too funny to adequately describe. Holidays on Ice is a collection of his stories about the holiday season. None are appropriate for children, which is one of the reasons I love them so much. This is a grown-ups only tradition! So fun! It’s nice, especially now that we have Eleanor, to have a tradition that is just for me and Josh.
Sometimes we listen to David Sedaris read some of the stories himself on This American Life. Here the links if you’d like to listen too:
While you’re at the This American Life website, I would recommend listening to all of the holiday episodes, just click on the year archive links at the top of the page and you’ll find a holiday episode for every December.
You can look forward to a special Hanukkah post this weekend and then next week is Christmas week! We’ll be starting the week off with a House Tour post featuring our holiday decor and then have a few more posts about the holidays.
